Marriage Moment–Friendship

Friendship is a foundational part of a strong marriage.  Marriage expert John Gottman uses the term “love maps” to demonstrate a type of friendship that occurs in strong marriages.

Simply, a love map is the part of your brain where you store all the relevant information about your partner’s life.  Take a moment and consider, how complete is your “love map” of your partner?

Couples need to spend time getting to know about each other’s hopes, disappointments, dreams, and desires. Big details like life changing events down to the very small details, such as likes and dislikes, are important.  Research demonstrates that couples who spend time building a mutual knowledge of one another are more likely to stay together and find true satisfaction.

This week, reflect on Psalm 139: 1 – 2, “O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar.”

God knows us and loves us completely. Committing to a deep knowledge of one another brings life and strength to the marital relationship.

In your spare moments this week, spend time discovering new things about your spouse.  Take time to talk daily and update your knowledge of all the intimate parts of your partner’s life.

In a short time, you will be on your way to a transformed marriage!
