Anxiety is the most common mental health concern in the United States, and one of the most frequently misunderstood. Most people know what it feels like to be nervous before a difficult conversation or worried about something uncertain. That kind of anxiety is a normal part of being human. It is the nervous system doing what it was designed to do: alert us to potential threats and prepare us to respond.
When anxiety becomes disproportionate to the situation, persistent, or difficult to control, it has moved into clinical territory. The worry does not quiet down when the stressor passes. The physical symptoms, the racing heart, the shortness of breath, and the restless nights become a constant background presence. Avoidance begins to shape daily life. Over time, the things a person stops doing to manage anxiety can narrow their world significantly.
CCA's counselors integrate the truth of Scripture with empirically based therapy practices to help clients understand what is driving their anxiety and build a different relationship with it. CCA offers anxiety counseling and treatment for children and adults across more than 90 locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, New York, Arkansas, and Kentucky. We would be glad to come alongside you.

What Anxiety Counseling Involves at CCA
Anxiety takes many forms, and effective treatment begins with understanding which form a person is dealing with and what is sustaining it. The physical, psychological, and spiritual reactions to anxiety-producing stressors are real and interconnected — CCA's whole-person approach attends to all three dimensions rather than addressing any one in isolation.
For some clients, CCA also offers Alpha-Stim as an adjunct to counseling — an FDA-cleared, non-invasive device that uses cranial electrotherapy stimulation to treat anxiety, insomnia, and pain, with no risk of drug interactions and no serious adverse effects. Speak with your CCA counselor to learn whether it may be right for your situation.

Recognizing Anxiety Symptoms
One or more of the following symptoms may indicate a clinical anxiety concern:
- Persistent apprehension or nervousness
- Fearfulness disproportionate to the situation
- Panic attacks
- Frequent shortness of breath
- Avoidance of people, places, or situations that cause discomfort
- Repeating or racing thoughts
- Flashbacks of threatening or traumatic events
- Ritualistic behaviors such as nail biting, hair pulling, or repetitive checking
- Frequent sleep disruption
This is not an exhaustive list. Anxiety can also show up as irritability, difficulty concentrating, physical tension, or a persistent sense that something bad is about to happen. If any of this resonates, it is worth talking with a counselor.
What Causes Anxiety
Anxiety arises in response to stressors, which can range from ordinary daily pressures to significant traumatic events. Common stressors include loss of a loved one, divorce, employment changes, difficult family dynamics, and health concerns. The physical, psychological, and spiritual reactions to these stressors are real and interconnected. CCA's whole-person approach attends to all three dimensions rather than addressing any one in isolation.
Faith and Anxiety
The promises of Scripture speak directly to the anxious heart:
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6–7But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
2 Corinthians 12:9–10They are grounded truths that CCA counselors are equipped to bring into the clinical work in a way that is purposeful and honest, rather than dismissive of what the person is actually experiencing.
Alpha-Stim Therapeutic Treatment
For some clients, CCA also offers Alpha-Stim as an adjunct to counseling. Alpha-Stim is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive medical device that uses cranial electrotherapy stimulation to treat anxiety, insomnia, and pain. It can be used alongside counseling and medication without the risk of drug interactions, and it has no serious adverse effects. If you are interested in whether Alpha-Stim may be appropriate for your situation, speak with your CCA counselor.
